This Sunday, Summer Student Ministry is cooking up dinner and all you hungry, studious, college kids are invited to share in the meal!
So come on by after the 5PM mass (around 6PM) this coming Sunday and come get your fill and meet new people!
See you there! Summer Student Ministry
***Also, if you want to help cook the dinner, come by at 4PM to the kitchen. (Don't know where it is? It's up the stairs past the lounge. If you get lost ask the front desk.)
Each first Saturday of the month, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament happens in the church all afternoon (from after the 12:10 Mass until 4:30pm with benediction.)
It is timed to coincide with our Loaves and Fishes meal. So we honor the presence of Christ in the Eucharist and in the feeding of our brothers and sisters. All are welcome!
This new assignment will take effect with the new school year, so I will be leaving here sometime this summer. Father Bill Edens will be coming on staff here, and I look forward to working with him and the whole staff on the transition.
As you know, I basically have only been a priest here, and while my seminary taught me much, YOU, dear parishioner and reader, continue to teach me much, much more. In my time here in formation as a novice in 2000, as a 'pre-Deacon' in the summer in 2004 and as a Priest since the summer of 2005, you and your prayers, friendships, struggles, hopes, horrors, and simple presence have molded me like the clay we sing about in the psalms and songs!
There is an old pastoral formation saying: "you cannot give what you do not have." Much of what I have, I have been gifted with by you; for that and much else, I am deeply grateful.
I am only 'beginning to process' this news myself, but know that with the amazing students in Ministry Leadership currently and with the continued synergy of our multi-generational community, the future continues to be, as Issac Hecker said long ago: "brighter than any past!'
Much of our Newman Center's mission is to prepare students during their time here for a life of servant leadership to the Kingdom of God, their families, the Church, the State and the World.
But we all 'learn and grow and do' all in tandem, and we are all students here! And some are moving on this season to the next right thing.
I do look forward to continuing the Paulist mission that you formed me to do at UT Knoxville as I look forward to the next few months with you.
I promise and ask that we keep one another in prayer! And oh, yes! There will be BBQs!!
Tuesday Night to Next Tuesday Night! 7pm - 1am please note: Not Saturday Night!
Study hall is cruising along here at Newman. If you need a place to study, here's a great place to relax, study, and take the occasional snack break. The chapel is always open too, for some quiet time to connect with God, and de-stress. Good luck with all your finals. And dont forget to pray with one of your favorite patron saints of scholars/academics:
Come join us this Sunday after the 5pm mass for the Newman Student Dinner End of the Year Barbecue!!!!
The Student Ministry Team will be grilling up burgers (with vegetarian options!) for y'all to enjoy, so come for some FREE FOOD, FRIENDS, and FELLOWSHIP before finals start!
Please join us for the last Seekers of the semester. Prepare yourselves spiritually and mentally for the whirlwind of finals and papers that’s about to begin. We’ll be in the gallery at 7:30 for praise, bible study, and fellowship. If you’d like to help Salgu and the praise band lead music, meet at 6:45. Victoria and Melissa will reflect on 2 Corinthians 6: 3-10. Hope to see you there, and good luck with finals!

Prayer
Whatever ultimate meaning life may have,
this much can be said already--
life is a call to share in the world's making.
It is a chance to intervene, to contribute,
to enchance what exists
by the sheer power
of one's own presence and activity.
One cannot be good simply by avoiding evil.
To be indifferent or apathetic
to the needs of one's neighbor,
to stand aloof from a world begging for help,
is already to be guilty.

Prayer
Peace of Heart
Almighty and eternal God, Give me, I beseech You, the great gift of inward peace. Command the winds and storms of my unruly passions. Subdue, by Your grace, my proneness to love created things too much. Give me a love of suffering for Your sake.Make me forbearing and kind to others, that I may avoid quarrels and contentions. And teach me constantly to seek after and to acquire that perfect resignation to Your Holy Will which alone brings interior peace.
Amen.

On Sunday 4/26th, Newman will be focusing on Religious Life, with discussions after the 9:30am and 5pm Masses, and with hot chocolate after the 10pm Mass.
In my five years as campus minister at Newman Hall, each year has seen at least one if not two people go on to pursue religious life with:
the family discussion in the morning (9:30am Mass, 10:40am Discussion)
Student dinner and discussion in the evening (5pm Mass, 6pm Dinner 7pm Discussion)
10pm Mass, then hot chocolate and fellowship.
It will be a blessing for our students to be exposed to their brothers and sisters in religious life in its varied ways of being lived out!
In the meantime, please pray for the perseverance and discernment of our recent grads and Newman Interns in religious life pictured above!
